tu un ñuu savi: the voice of the Mixtec people

Teotitlan de Flores Magòn, Oaxaca, November 25, 2012

Faced with the imminent dismantling of our sister radio “tu un ñuu savi the voice of the Mixtec people,” by commercial radio stations that are trying to keep indigenous peoples from exercising their right to have and create their own news media, we denounce the following events:

1. At 3 o’clock in the afternoon on November 25, several heavily armed men arrived at the teacher training school in Huajuapam de León, the site of “tu un ñuu savi” radio station, with the intention of taking away the equipment used to broadcast at a frequency of 90.1 FM.

2. Only the bravery and solidarity of the people of Huajuapam de León put a stop to one more attempt to do away with this communications space run by schoolteachers and community people.

3. Threatened by the shady interests of the class that remains ensconced in power and continues to impede free expression, the community radio station Ricardo Flores Magon, committed to arousing consciousness in the Teotitlan de Flores Magon region, joins with Radio Rainbow, dedicated to painting the rebel universe at 90.1FM in the new Jalapa del Marquès region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Together, we lift our voices in solidarity with our sister radio “tu un ñuu savi, the voice of the Mixtec people.”

Free people for free speech; even death won’t silence us.
