Jun 15th, 2007 - Barucha Calamity Peller writes: At around five in the morning on Thursday, June 14th, 2007 hundreds of fireworks cracked the quiet dawn and burst in the sky above Oaxaca City, Mexico. Though the streets remained still, people began waking up and movement chants could be heard coming from the windows of houses. “If Ulises doesn’t go there will be no peace!”.
This isn’t like any other day in Oaxaca. Thursday marked the one year anniversary of the violent attempted eviction by the state police of the Section 22 teachers sit in strike in the Zocalo, and what happened that day set off a chain of events that led to a statewide uprising and a popular movement with millions of participants to remove the right-wing governor Ulises Ruiz from office and replace the entire state government with popular assemblies. An organization of thousands of civil groups was formed, called the Peoples’ Popular Assembly of Oaxaca (APPO). Physically removing local governments from office, the APPO lived autonomously in the capitol city and other communities for nearly five months until the entrance of the Preventive Federal Police in the last days of October.
In the early afternoon of June 14th, 2007, a megamarch of over 300 thousand participants began to arrive in the Zocalo of Oaxaca City. The march began at the airport nearly 8 kilometers away, and as the beginning of the march entered the Zocalo people were still leaving from the airport. Contingents from Chiapas and Michoacan and other states in Mexico participated in the march as well.

At approximately 7pm barricades reappeared for the first time since November throughout the city. People spontaneously constructed barricades, and at least two major thoroughfares were blockaded using buses and cars. Crowds gathered to reinforce the barricades, and a festive mood took over Oaxaca City.
Though the movement to remove Ulises Ruiz from office and replace the existing government with popular assemblies was brutally repressed and many members of the movement were forced into hiding after the violent battle between protesters and police on November 25th, 2006, the struggle in Oaxaca is far from over. On May 1st and again on June 14th, 2007, hundreds of thousands of people marched in Oaxaca City in a strong show of force of the remaining presence of dissent among the Oaxacan people and their continuing demands for justice and autonomy.

LAS BARRICADAS EXIGIERON JUSTICIA
14 de Junio de 2007.
A las 17:00 hrs se empezaron a cerrar las calles. Con camiones, trailers, volteos, palos y piedras se instalaron una por una barricadas en toda la ciudad como parte del plan de acción de la APPO y el magisterio oaxaqueño. Las primeras barricadas se instalaron en los lugares donde cayeron asesinados nuestros compañeros que formaban parte de este gran movimiento.
En todas las barricadas se realizaron emotivos homenajes a los caídos, además de que se instalaron más barricadas que las planeadas originalmente, nutridas por vecinos que se sumaron a la exigencia de justicia. Las barricadas se quitaron a las 22:00 hrs cerrando con un rotundo éxito la jornada de lucha del primer aniversario del intento de desalojo al plantón del magisterio.
LAS BARRICADAS TENÍAN NOMBRE Y APELLIDO.
José Jiménez Colmenares. Mecánico. Asesinado durante un ataque armado a una manifestación pacifica el día 10 de agosto de 2006 en la calle División Oriente del municipio de Oaxaca.
Lorenzo San Pablo Hernández. Arquitecto. Asesinado por grupos policíacos y paramilitares que se desplazaban en un convoy de 40 camionetas disparando contra los plantones de la APPO. San Pablo fue baleado en la Calle Nezahualcoyotl en la Colonia Reforma el 22 de agosto de 2006 mientras cuidaba la estación de radio La ley 710 en manos de la APPO.
Alejandro García Hernández. Rotulista. Asesinado por grupos paramilitares mientras cuidaba una barricada en la Avenida “Símbolos Patrios” el 14 de octubre en la madrugada.
Pánfilo Hernández. Profesor de primaria indígena. Asesinado de tres balazos en el abdomen cuando salía de una reunión vecinal de la Asamblea Popular de los Pueblos de Oaxaca (APPO), en el barrio de El Pozo, colonia Jardín el 18 de octubre de 2006.
Braldley Roland Will. Periodista estadounidesde de Indymedia. Asesinado mientras documentaba un ataque armado de priístas y policías del municipio priísta de Sta. Lucia del Camino a colonos que instalaban una barricada el 27 de octubre en la Colonia Calicanto.
Emilio Alonso Fabián. Profesor de la Candelaria Loxicha. Asesinado durante el ataque armado de grupos paramilitares al plantón que mantenía tomada la Casa Oficial de Gobierno el 27 de Octubre de 2006.
Jorge Alberto López. Enfermero del IMSS. Asesinado por una granada de gas lacrimógeno disparada por la PFP el 29 de Octubre de 2006, mientras auxiliaba a los heridos que dejaba el avance de los federales sobre la ciudad de Oaxaca.
