Friends of Brad Will write: A year has passed since our friend and brother, Brad Will, was murdered in Oaxaca. On Saturday, October 27th, friends and family will gather at St. Mark’s Church to honor his memory and the legacy of courage and resistance that he left behind.

Please come, bring food for the body and the spirit. Share your bread and your wine; your poems and your songs; your love and your rage.

Oaxaca is Not Over!

sf_10-24-07-sm.jpg On, Wednesday, October 24th, a benefit will be held at Station 40 in San Francisco at 7pm to support the continuing resistance in Oaxaca, Mexico. The newly released documentary “Un Poquito de Tanta Verdad” (A Little Bit of So Much Truth) will be screened accompanying dinner and refreshments. The proceeds of the evening will go to Colectivo Mujer Nueva (Oaxaca autonomous women collective) and VOCAL (Oaxacan Voices Constructing Freedom and Autonomy) an anarchist radio project in Oaxaca.

Un Poquito De Tanta Verdad, the new documentary by Corrugated Films in collaboration with Mal De Ojo TV, has been described by Emir Sader, of the Latin American Council on Social Sciences, as “Powerful…impressive. An essential testimony. Without a doubt, A Little Bit of So Much Truth will leave it’s mark on contemporary, independent documentary filmmaking.” (en español)

Three Bay Area activists (Carolina Dutton, Mary Ann Tenuto, and Colombe Chappey) will give an update on their recent visits to Oaxaca and Chiapas. They will report on the increased number of kidnappings, disappearances, and beatings of APPO (Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca) members; the New Year’s encuentro between the Zapatistas and the people of the world in Chiapas; and an analysis of the impact of the social movements on the economic and political situation in Mexico.

Gustavo Esteva and Sergio Beltrán
“Oaxaca, the APPO and the Alternative Media”

The Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO in Spanish) coalesced in response to police repression against a strike by the Oaxacan teachers’ union and occupied the city of Oaxaca from July to November 2006. Gustavo Esteva and Sergio Beltrán will discuss the conflict as well as the strategic use of the alternative media by this grassroots social movement and the Mexican government.

Gustavo Esteva is a Mexican political analyst and the founder of Universidad de la Tierra in Oaxaca, Mexico. Sergio Beltrán is a researcher at the Universidad de la Tierra and has worked extensively in alternative radio production. Both participated in last year’s debates of the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca.
