Protestors at Mexican Embassy in DC demand: Hands off Oaxaca!

On October 11th, 2006, the IWW led a protest at the Mexican Embassy in Washington DC demanding that Fox and Calderon cease and desist any harassment of the striking teachers who have occupied Oaxaca for the past several months.

    Late yesterday a tentative accord was reached between the striking teachers, APPO and the state that will put an end to the blockades. The main demand of the protestors that the governor of the State of Oaxaca step down was taken off the table. In exchange teachers will recieve the pay raise they have been asking for. Both the union and APPO must go back to their base to get a thumbs up or down on the deal before an real end is in sight. Word from the ground is that the city of Oaxaca is much less tense today.

    As part of the deal the striking teachers and APPO would have to agree to allow the police back in the city. As of late today that was rejected, meaning that the proposed deal is likely not to go through.
