Political prisoner Abraham Ramírez begins hunger strike demanding freedom!

x Abraham Ramírez Vásquez

To Josefina Jaime Quiroz, Director General of Sanctions, Oaxaca

I, C. Abraham Ramírez Vásquez, prisoner at the Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz Prison, Oaxaca, with all due respect, report the following: Today, March 3, I will have been in the holding cell of the Mihuatlán prison for 31 days, after my transfer from San Pedro Pochutla to this place. Up until now I have not been informed as to the reasons for my transfer. They say that the warden at the San Pedro Pochutla claims that it is because the other prisoners at Pochutla don’t like me. Ever since I was taken to that place along with my comrades Noel and Juventino García Cruz, we have always been known as hard workers and have never had problems with the other prisoners. The only thing that might have bothered the warden were the grievances I sent to your office in strict accordance with my right to petition as guaranteed in Article 8 of the Constitution, seeking dignified treatment for the prison population: medicine, improvements in the conjugal visits area, repairs of showers and toilets, sources of work, food (it may seem like a joke but there’s not even a dining room here) and education, in keeping with Article 18 of the Constitution, as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

When they took me out of the Pochutla prison, I wasn’t informed of anything, as I said. They didn’t give me time to get my things together, and my wife along with my three children, who are four, six and eleven years old, were left inside, putting their lives and physical integrity at risk. The psychological damage to my children is irreparable. For all of the above, I request that you inform me and the general public of the motives, the reasons for this and that you tell me what terrible thing I did to deserve being transferred. And if the Pochutla warden has committed irregularities, I ask your intervention in sending me back to the aforementioned prison because I have four school-aged children who depend on my work and because the proceedings against me have not yet come to an end in the criminal court at Santa María Huatulco. My hands are clean of the crime I’m charged with and of any accusations they may make to justify my transfer, but time will tell who is right and history will be the judge.

Respectfully yours,

Abraham Ramírez Vásquez

Note: I am on hunger strike as of today, Thursday, March 19.
