An exposé of repression and resistance, “el enemigo común” documents paramilitary activity against indigenous communities in Oaxaca, Mexico from 2002 through 2005.

Phil writes: April 21st, 2008, was the first day of the Security and Prosperity Partnership Summit, in which the presidents of Mexico and the United States, and the prime minister of Canada met to discuss security and trade, as well as the neoliberal and militaristic integration of North America. In protest, the local community organizers of New Orleans held the People’s Summit, in which visiting activists met with local organizers to discuss the history of racism, oppression and capitalism in North America and how to resist those things now and into the future.

March 3rd, 2008 - Building Bridges writes: President Bush announced a $500 million/year security cooperation plan with Mexico, the Merida Initiative or Plan Mexico. This is increasingly being used to militarize the Mexican state to counter grassroots organizing and protesting.

~Bradley writes: Gabriela León Vázquez gave an artist talk at UC Santa Cruz on January 29th about her exhibition at UCSC’s Sesnon Gallery, Sunday Walk to the Zócalo of Oaxaca (Paseo dominical por el Zócalo de Oaxaca). She was born in Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico in 1973, and is currently living and working in Oaxaca. The exhibition, on display until March 8th, is a multi-media artistic response to the popular revolt and resistance that unfolded in Oaxaca in 2006 and 2007, including photos from the Peoples’ Guelaguetza (la Guelaguetza Popular) on July 16th, 2007.
The following audio was recorded at UCSC’s Oakes College room 105 and edited into two tracks; Gabriela León’s presentation, followed by the question and answer session. Read More, View Photos and Listen to Audio

October 30th, 2007 - HIMC Radio Posse writes: For the November 2nd Edition of the Houston Indymedia Radio Show, Jill Freidberg spoke with Houston Indymedia Programmers about the documentary film Un Poquito de Tanta Verdad, which indymedia will be screening on November 3rd at Rice Media Center. The film looks at the uprising that took place in Oaxaca Mexico in 2006, and the central role that radio played in promoting the struggles of social movements, as they occupied 14 corporate stations for community use.
