URGENT: A solidarity caravan headed towards the Autonomous Municipality of San Juan Copala in the Triqui Region of Oaxaca, made up of international observers and members of CACTUS, VOCAL, Section 22 of the SNTE and the APPO, was fired upon in the La Sabana community controlled by the UBISORT organization (Unidad de Bienestar Social de la Región Triqui). This organization has hindered the efforts to rescue the wounded. According to initial reports, at least 15 people are wounded, but there is no information regarding deaths. Cactus Director Alberta Cariño has been reported as disappeared. We fear that this action is a provocation that may be used to justify the militarization of the Triqui Region.
Requested action:
Call [or email] the Oaxaca state government and demand the establishment of the conditions necessary for the rescue of the wounded and the provision of medical attention.
