Protest Against Mexican President Felipe Calderon in Oaxaca

Oaxaca. February 15th, 2011

A confrontation between Oaxacan teachers from the Section 22 teachers union and Federal Prevention Police and the military began around noon today in downtown Oaxaca city. Protesters attempted to block the arrival of Mexican President Felipe Calderon when the confrontation ensued with federal police and military personnel. Tear gas was fired and firearms were discharged. Around 1 PM the skirmish settled. At 2 PM the military open fired into the crowd and one local reporter has been wounded. Right now the confrontation continues as protestors hold their ground and the police and military are locking down the city’s center. The latest report from the street says tear gas has been launched into the Section 22 Teacher Union building.
