July 18th: International Day of Action Against Repression in Mexico

International Day of Action Against Repression and for the Liberation of the Political Prisoners in Mexico

The Other Campaign in New York, Movement for Justice in El Barrio writes:
As Mexican immigrants living in the United States we are making a special call to all Mexicans and Chicanos here in the U.S that are members of the Other Campaign that we join with this day of action on Wednesday, July 18th so that together with those struggling in our native country we can liberate our beloved Mexico.

Additionally, we are making a call to people all over the world to organize protests and actions as part of an international day of action against repression in Mexico. We are asking that these actions also take place on Wednesday, July 18th of 2007.

To Our Zapatista Sisters and Brothers:
To All Organizations, Groups, Collectives, Families, and Individuals in “The Other Campaign”:
To All Mexicans and Chican@s in The Other Campaign in the United States:
To All International Adherents to the Sixth Declaration:

What follows is a call to unite our proposed “International Day of Action Against Repression and for the Liberation of the Political Prisoners in Mexico” to the proposal put forth by the Sixth commission that The Other Campaign “prepare actions all over Mexico and that they realize a decentralized national, regional and local action to establish a national body against repression on the 18th of July of 2007.”

We are Movement for Justice in El Barrio. We are an organization of Mexican immigrants that were forced to leave Mexico and come to New York because of the neoliberal system. We fight against the displacement from our homes here in New York and for the liberation of our Mexico. We are adherents to the Sixth Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle and part of The Other Campaign. We thank you for allowing us to share our humble and simple word.

On the 20th of May of 2007, we proposed that everyone unite for an “International Day of Action Against Repression and for the Liberation of the Political Prisoners in Mexico.” In our proposal, we explained the reasons for our proposal as the following:

From where we are, North of the Rio Bravo, we are filled with pain and rage to hear about the repression being exerted by the Mexican government on The Other Campaign. The repression began more than a year ago with the terrible events in San Salvador Atenco. As the strength of The Other Campaign grew, the repression spread to Oaxaca, Yucatan, Chiapas, San Luis Potosi and to all different parts of the country. The repression has included police brutality, torture, arbitrary detentions, the murder of two youth, and the rape of detained women. In the past few months the repression has intensified. Recently, soldiers from the federal army harassed Zapatista Delegates from the Sixth Commission, the Compañero David Vanegas was beaten and illegally jailed in Oaxaca, three members of the People’s Front for the Defense of the Land, from Atenco, were illegally sentenced to 67 years in prison, and these are not the only cases. This repression fills us with anger. That is why we propose that we unite the strength of the many struggles that make up The Other Campaign to oppose this repression and demand freedom for all political prisoners in Mexico.

Many organizations, collectives, groups, families and individuals supported and accepted our proposal. We would like to thank all of those people for joining us and for demonstrating their commitment to action against the repression in Mexico.

Last week, our sisters and brothers in The Other Campaign in Mexico came together in the National Forum Against Repression and agreed to accept the proposal of the Sixth Commission for a national, regional and local day of action on Wednesday, the 18th of July of 2007 to establish a national body against repression.

We have consulted with all of those who accepted our original proposal and we have decided to change the date of our day of action and join the day proposed by the Sixth Commission. For that reason, we are making the following call:

1) As Mexican immigrants living in the United States we are making a special call to all Mexicans and Chicanos here in the U.S that are members of the Other Campaign that we join with this day of action on Wednesday, July 18th so that together with those struggling in our native country we can liberate our beloved Mexico.

2) Additionally, we are making a call to people all over the world to organize protests and actions as part of an international day of action against repression in Mexico. We are asking that these actions also take place on Wednesday, July 18th of 2007.

One more time, we send our embraces, full of hope, unity and brother and sisterhood from someplace in New York, a place where we live, but also a place where Mexico lives deep in our hearts.

Sincerely,
From The Other Campaign in New York
Movement for Justice in El Barrio

“For Movement for Justice in El Barrio, the struggle for justice means fighting for the liberation of women, lesbians, people of color, gays and the transgender community. We all share a common enemy and its called neoliberalism. Neoliberalism wishes to divide us and keep us from combining our forces. We will defeat this by continuing to unite our entire community until we achieve true liberation for all.” – Victor Caletre, Movement for Justice in El Barrio

The solidarity with the people of Oaxaca is a great motivation for the popular struggle.

  4. MANIFESTO OF THE FIRST ANARKOGALACTIC ENCOUNTER IN THE FACE OF THE NEW WAVE OF REPRESSION IN OAXACA

Today, July 16, 2007, at approximately 10 a.m., there was harsh repression of the march held in the city of Oaxaca to inaugurate the popular Guelaguetza, and to boycott the official Guelaguetza promoted by the Ulises Ruiz government and different transnational businesses with neoliberal, antipopular politics. This march had been called by numerous organizations, collectives, and individuals of the people of Oaxaca.

From the beginning, the march was under surveillance by the police, who tried to intimidate the people and made several arrests. During the course of the march, there were confrontations when the police began to throw rocks and shoot teargas, resulting in the dispersion of the contingent. The police took advantage of the situation, surrounding, beating, and violently arresting approximately 60 comrades. As of this moment we do not know what their situation is, but it is highly probable that people have been seriously injured, arrested, disappeared, and tortured.

As of now, we know that 40 0f the comrades arrested have been presented at the Attorney General’s Office in the state of Oaxaca. Four of them are seriously wounded, especially one comrade. Emeterio Merino Cruz Vazquez, who was hospitalized after being hit with a teargas cannister. We fear for the comrade’s life because information about his state of health is confusing. In addition to the fact that the city is under a state of seige and information is being blocked, there have been several reports of the comrade’s death.

Among those arrested are Silvia Gabriela Hernandez Salinas, a university student in Social Sciences at the Benito Juarez University of Oaxaca was arrested. Silvia is being held at the Tlacolula Prison and is being tortured and harassed constantly due to her participation in the organization Oaxacan Voices Constructing Autonomy and Freedom (VOCAL).

In the cases of all the people arrested, torture and sexual abuse have been reported. The list of those arrested that we now have can be found at oaxacalibre.org

This entire repressive situation is ocurring at a time when the popular movement of Oaxaca is once again gaining ground in the social struggle. The repression is an escalation in the increased militarization that different organized struggles are experiencing in the country as a whole.

The second Anarkogalactic encounter that is now taking place in the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas, attended by both national and international comrades, extends our solidarity as we strive to integrate our work and organizational proposals for solidifying the anarchist movement so that our solidarity can be translated into concrete actions that come from a comprehensive critical analysis of the current situation.

All the organizations, collectives, and individuals manifest our repudiation and rejection of the supposed security policy of the government fostered by the military dictatorship of the PAN now headed by Calderon in conjunction with the PRI and PRD, which is being developed throughout the country. This policy is becoming harsher all the time and is seen in its most brutal, inhuman form in the state of Oaxaca.

As an anarchist movement, we will never stop struggling against the criminal policies of the state aimed at terrorizing the society by jailing, repressing, killing, and doing away with all the spaces that have been effective in creating the self-organization and self- determination of the society.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Oaxaca and demand the immediate presentation of all disappeared people and the freedom of all political prisoners kidnapped by the government, whose only crime has been to struggle for a real transformation in the lives of a rebellious people full of dignity.

We call on the anarchist movement, the Other Campaign, the society as a whole, and the international community to mobilize on July 18, carrying out different actions to express our solidarity and denounce the repression, and also to continue the mobilization on July 19 with disruptive actions against the repression and to participate in the Forum against Repression to stop this blatant low-intensity warfare that we have been subjected to for years.

    STOP THE MILITARIZATION
    FREE ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS
    PRESENT ALL DISAPPEARED PRISONERS ALIVE
DO AWAY WITH ALL STATE POWERS
    PFP OUT OF OAXACA
    DISSOLUTION OF ALL REPRESSIVE BODIES

Participants in the encounter include 120 comrades from:

    MEXICO:
Hidalgo, Veracruz, Texcoco, Durango, Tijuana, Monterrey, San Luís Potosí, Baja California Norte, San Cristóbal de las Casas, DF, Querétaro.

    NORTH AMERICA:
